The South Oldham High School Marching Dragons, the award-winning marching band, is Crestwood's pride.
The rural community was established in 1857 as Beard's Station in honor of early settler Joe Beard. To residents' dismay, railroad conductors nicknamed their town "Whiskers." In 1909, the city was re-christened Crestwood.
Yew Dell Gardens of Crestwood are heralded nationally and internationally. Today, a partnership project of the Garden Conservancy, Yew Dell showcases a variety of garden designs, from classic topiaries, a formal English walled garden, and its hallmark evergreen Serpentine Garden, all created by Theodore Klein during nearly 60 years of dedication. Once Theodore and Martha Lee Klein's private Shangri-La, their rural estate, thriving commercial nursery, the arboretum housing their collection of rare plants and trees and whimsical castle and stone cottage, Yew Dell Gardens is now a beautiful refuge of Crestwood. Current garden staff members continue the studies of Klein's "secret garden" with a broad scope of collections, evaluation of plants and experiments with species compatible with Oldham County's climate and conditions. The world-famous gardens present a summer concert series, a Hummingbird Festival, and Boo Dell for family Halloween fun.
Another down-time alternative in Crestwood is the Fox Hollow Clinic and Spa, featuring integrative medicine, specializing in holistic massage therapy, and the Fox Hollow Bed and Breakfast.
In addition, Fox Hollow Farm, a 1,300-acre biodynamic farm, grows and sells its fresh produce along with 100 percent grass-fed beef. Farm tours and guided hikes are available.
